This dragon skull was hand carved from Labradorite.
Belonging to the feldspar family, which is a very common class of minerals, labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar, which means that it belongs to the plagioclase series, a subclass of feldspars.
The general chemical composition of labradorite is a sodium and calcium aluminosilicate with the chemical formula (Na,Ca)(Al,Si)₄O₈. The major elements that go into the composition of labradorite are sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si) and oxygen (O).
Labradorite is known for its shimmering play of colors, called labradorescence, which can display hues of blue, green, yellow, orange, and even red. This optical phenomenon is due to the presence of thin layers of different substances, often inclusions of minerals such as ilmenite, magnetite, or copper inclusions.
