This red sandalwood, from India, much rarer than white sandalwood, has no characteristic odor and is one of the most precious woods. In Buddhism, sandalwood is one of the Padma (lotus) and corresponds to Buddha Amitabha, moreover the element of this Buddha is fire and its color, red. Sandalwood is considered capable of transforming desires and keeping the attention of a person practicing meditation

The pendant finishing this mala represents Buddha and Mara, each representing a face of duality. Handcrafted in Chinese boxwood and red sandalwood

The representation of a half Buddha, half Mara head is an iconographic motif that is often used in Buddhist art to symbolize inner conflict or spiritual duality. To understand this representation, it is helpful to know the figures of Buddha and Mara in the Buddhist tradition.

1. Buddha: The Buddha is the founder of Buddhism and is considered an enlightened being, a model of wisdom, compassion and enlightenment. He represents enlightenment, inner peace and liberation from the cycle of suffering (samsara).

2. Mara: Mara is a demonic being or personification of the forces of evil and ignorance in Buddhism. He is often depicted as tempting the Buddha with illusions, sense desires, and fears to divert him from the path of enlightenment.

When a head is depicted as half Buddha and half Mara, it symbolizes the inner conflict that can exist in the mind of an individual seeking the spiritual path. It reflects the struggle between positive forces (represented by Buddha) and negative forces (represented by Mara) that can influence our thoughts, actions, and state of mind. It is a representation of the duality inherent in the human condition, where one must choose between the path of enlightenment and the path of delusion and attachment.

This representation reminds Buddhist practitioners of the importance of overcoming inner obstacles and temptations to achieve spiritual enlightenment and liberation. It also emphasizes that each person carries within them the ability to choose their own path and transcend negative forces that can hinder the path to spiritual realization.
