Mala in mammoth ivory and jade - rare and exceptional
Ivory mala, handcrafted with exceptional materials, made by us

As Malakara, we make all of our malas ourselves, scrupulously respecting tradition.
As a gemologist graduated from the National Institute of Gemmology in Paris, all our materials are appraised and certified.

To know everything about malas, their meanings, their uses, their different variants and also a short explanation on malakaras, the creators of mala, please click on this text taking you to our dedicated and explanatory article on our blog

Total length of this ivory mala: 48cm long
Total weight: 98 grams

This ivory mala, whose pendant was carved by a master of Buddhist art, is made of woolly mammoth ivory (Mammuthus primigenius), a species of mammoth that lived in the Siberian region during the last ice age. These mammoths became extinct about 10,000 years ago, but due to the preservation conditions in the Siberian permafrost, their tusks (or ivories) have often been preserved.

This ivory mala is composed of:
108 Genuine Mammoth Ivory Beads
Dimensions of each pearl: 6.95mm high by 5.86mm wide.
Mammoth ivory, extracted from Siberian permafrost, is imported into China almost exclusively through the Helonjiang region, a border area with Russia.

This fossil ivory has become a noble and privileged material for sculptors, just like jade.

Pendant also in mammoth ivory hand-carved with the effigy of the bodhisattva Akashagarbha

Dimensions of this pendant concluding this exceptional ivory mala: 64.19mm high by 41.76mm wide by 19.21mm thick.

Bodhisattva Akashagarbha, also known as Kokūzō in Japan, embodies celestial wisdom and infinite space. His name, which means "treasure in space," evokes the notion of infinite spiritual wealth contained in the universal mind.
Akashagarbha is often depicted wielding a sword in his right hand, and much like the bodhisattva Manjushri, this sword symbolizes his power to cut through ignorance and illusion.
The sword, often called the "flame of wisdom," represents Akashagarbha's ability to dispel the darkness of ignorance and light the path to enlightenment.

With his serene and focused gaze, Akashagarbha meditates deeply while holding the sword, emphasizing the need for penetrating wisdom to overcome spiritual obstacles. This visual representation reflects the duality of compassion and steadfastness, indicating that while committed to selfless love, Akashagarbha also possesses the strength to cut through the illusions that hinder the path to enlightenment.

The pearl that Akashagarbha holds in his left hand is called "cintamani" or "mani". This sacred pearl is a symbol of wish-fulfilment and the accomplishment of spiritual aspirations. It is sometimes depicted with a flame at the top, indicating the enlightened and transformative nature of this pearl.

The cintamani is associated with compassion and the ability to grant altruistic wishes. It also represents spiritual wealth and generosity. Akashagarbha, by holding this bead, thus expresses his ability to realize benevolent wishes and guide beings towards enlightenment.

To enhance this ivory mala, we have integrated three counter-pearls in nephrite jade known as polar jade of very high quality also originating from Russia.

The central jade pearl of a sumptuous green color called "water green" has dimensions of 15.37mm high by 12.16mm wide.

The other two counterpearls are engraved with the mantra of compassion "Om mani padme hum" and have dimensions of 10.64mm high by 10.51mm wide.
According to Tibetan Buddhism, reciting the Chenrezi Om Mani mantra

Padme Hum, either aloud or inwardly, is an invocation to attention
benevolent and powerful of Chenrezig, the expression of the compassion of the
Buddha. To learn more about this famous mantra, please click on this text which will take you to our full article on our blog

Finally, above the pendant we have integrated a disc also in polar jade from Russia, 15.30mm in diameter .
