As Malakara, we make all of our malas ourselves, scrupulously respecting tradition.
As a gemologist graduated from the National Institute of Gemmology in Paris, all our materials are appraised and certified.

1) What is a mala?

A mala is a prayer bead traditionally used in various spiritual practices, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and other Asian religious and spiritual traditions.
It is often made of 108 beads, although some malas may have a different number of beads, sometimes a multiple of 108.

108 high quality natural tiger eye/hawk eye beads from South Africa
Diameter of each pearl 8mm

The counter beads and the finishing bead (also called Guru Bead) of this tiger's eye mala are also made of natural tiger's eye from South Africa. Dimensions of each counter bead: 12.80mm long by 10.08mm thick.

This handcrafted tiger's eye mala, respectful of Buddhist tradition, is decorated with copper discs and buffalo horn discs .

To make this tiger's eye mala, we used a traditional cord for making malas representing the 5 colors of the 5 meditation Buddhas.

This tiger's eye mala ends with a sliding knot below the Guru bead allowing the whole thing to be loosened for reciting mantras and then tightening the Buddhist rosary to wear it as a bracelet or necklace.

4) What is Tiger's Eye/Hawk's Eye?
A) Gemmology
Tiger's eye is a variety of quartz recognizable by its golden yellow to golden brown hues, with shimmering bands that give it the appearance of a tiger's eye. It gets its name from these distinctive visual characteristics
.
Hawk's eye, also a variety of quartz, is recognizable by its blue color.

The formation of tiger's eye and falcon's eye occurs in metamorphic rocks, such as schist, gneiss or granite. It is formed by a process called pseudomorphosis, which is a mineralogical replacement. In this case, pseudomorphosis involves the substitution of the original minerals by new minerals, usually in the form of silica (SiO2).

The formation of tiger's eye and hawk's eye begins with the presence of crocidolite, a fibrous form of asbestos, in the host rock.

Over time, crocidolite undergoes pseudomorphosis. The fibers are replaced by silica, in the form of quartz, which is deposited in the cracks and spaces between the fibers.

During this process, the alignment of crocidolite fibers and silica deposits occurs in an organized manner. This alignment creates the chatoyancy effect, or , characteristic of tiger's eye and hawk's eye. When light hits these aligned fibers, it is reflected in a specific way, giving the impression of seeing a tiger's eye moving through the stone.

This complex process of pseudomorphosis creates a unique and visually captivating stone, highly prized in jewelry and decorative objects.

When Tiger's Eye and Hawk's Eye are mixed together, it creates a unique visual appearance where the colors and chatoyancy of the two stones complement each other.

B) Lithotherapy
Tiger's Eye is associated with self-confidence, mental clarity, and protection.

The hawk's eye is associated with inner vision, insight and communication.

In terms of lithotherapy, there is a fusion of the properties and energies of the two stones, thus offering a combination of attributes.
