The symbol of the owl clasping a skull in its wings has a rich and complex history in the context of Mexican symbolism. Its origins can be traced back to several elements of Mesoamerican culture and spirituality.

The Aztecs and other Mesoamerican civilizations had a spiritual relationship with the owl, seeing it as a messenger between the worlds of the living and the dead. The owl was also associated with wisdom, knowledge, and the deity of death, Mictlantecuhtli, in Aztec culture. At the same time, human skulls were ubiquitous symbols, linked to death, transformation, and spirituality. The Aztecs used skulls in rituals and offerings to honor their deities.

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition that helped shape this symbol. During this holiday, families honor their deceased by decorating altars with symbolic objects, including skulls (calaveras) and owl figurines. This symbolism expresses the duality of life and death, emphasizing the transformation and transition between the two states. It reminds people of the deeper meaning of death, as well as how it is implicitly linked to life.

In this context, the owl is interpreted as the protector of the dead, as the guardian of the underworld, and as a symbol of the wisdom that the souls of the deceased survive. The fact that the owl is depicted with its eyes open and its wings closed around its skull emphasizes the vigilance, protection, and spiritual wisdom offered to the deceased. This symbol embodies a fusion of the belief in protection, wisdom, and the transition between life and death in Mexican culture.
