3- What is a netsuke?

a) of Chinese origins
Like the vast majority of Japanese cultural objects, the netsuke has its origins in ancient China, where we find the "钮扣" (pronounced "niǔkòu"), which literally translates to "button" or "fastener".

These devices were used to attach items to clothing. Although Japanese Netsuke is distinct from this Chinese tradition, it is plausible that early ideas of attaching objects to clothing were inspired by similar practices in ancient China.

B) Netsuke in Japan
The kimono, a traditional Japanese garment, without pockets to carry small objects such as purses, medicine boxes (Inro), requires a practical solution. Women hide them in the sleeves, men hang them on a rope passed behind their belt (Obi).

These hanging accessories are called Sagemono.

To prevent any fall, they are attached to a stopper, the Netsuke, firmly placed above the belt.

The term Netsuke, in Japanese (根付), combines the ideas of "root" and "attached", thus suggesting humble origins, perhaps simple pieces of wood. Only sculptures with one or two holes (Himotoshi) can claim the title of Netsuke, allowing their attachment to the Sagemono.

4- The legend of the 9-tailed fox
9-Tailed Fox Pendant - Deer Antler | Obsidian Dragons
The legend of the nine-tailed fox, originally from China (
Jiuweihu) but also present in other Asian cultures such as Japan (Kitsune) and Korea (Gumiho), is rich in variations. According to Chinese tradition, the nine-tailed fox is often associated with a powerful spirit or demon with supernatural powers.

In many versions, it is described as a cunning creature capable of transforming itself into a woman of great beauty to deceive men, in order to eat their liver and heart.
These foxes, seeking power or revenge, often use their human forms to seduce men, causing trouble and disaster.

Legend has it that a fox gets its ninth tail after living for a thousand years. This extra tail represents an increase in its power and magical abilities.

However, despite their cunning and power, nine-tailed foxes are often depicted as malicious or evil beings, and their stories often serve to warn against the dangers of deception and seduction.

In some versions, these foxes can also be benevolent, offering blessings or teachings to worthy people.
