Traditional tangka pendant- Ghau- Chenrezi Buddha

The ghau is a kind of portable altar in which the image of the chosen deity of the owner is kept, wrapped in silk clothes. The vast majority of Tibetans use the ghau at home and carry it during their travels. They keep it on a real altar at home. When traveling, it is hung on the back belt. It serves as a protective symbol during travels and also allows its owner to prove his devotion to his deity.

BODHISATTVA CHENREZI IN THE POSTURE KNOWN AS POWA OR TRANSFER OF CONSCIOUSNESS:
A practice specific to Tibetan Vajrayana belonging to the techniques of the perfection phase (Tib. rdzogs-rim). Unlike other techniques of this type, reserved for confirmed practitioners of tantras, powa is widely taught to all.
For seven to twenty-one days, the practitioner practices transferring his conscious principle into a pure Buddha field. Once the signs of success are obtained, he is assured that at his death the transfer will be easy. Powa is present in all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
Although it most often has as its destination the pure field of Buddha Amitabha, it can just as easily be addressed to any other Buddha or elected deity to whom the practitioner devotes a firm conscience.

Chenrezi is part of the triad of the "three saints of the west" with the Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta and the Buddha Amitabha. To learn all about these three essential figures of Buddhism, please click on this link which will take you directly to our article on our blog

The reverse side of this tangka pendant depicts the vajrayogini mandala.
Vajrayogini is a tantric deity considered a manifestation of enlightened wisdom and is worshipped in various Buddhist traditions, particularly Vajrayana.

The central dorje, also known as the vajra, is a Buddhist symbol representing the indestructible nature of ultimate reality, emptiness, and the skillful method or skillful means to attain enlightenment. The dorje is often used in Vajrayana Buddhist ritual and is a frequent attribute of Vajrayana deities.

The mandala, in general, is a symbolic representation of the cosmos in Buddhism and other spiritual traditions. It can be used as a support for meditation or in symbolic rituals.

In the case of the Vajrayogini mandala, the dorje at the center represents the essential nature of reality, with the deity himself surrounded by specific deities, symbols, and motifs that have deep meanings in Buddhist cosmology. The practice associated with this mandala is often linked to meditation and tantric rituals aimed at achieving enlightenment.

This tangka pendant is openable, like all ghau, closing a copy of the heart sutra.
