Many are puzzled by the use of bone beads, but in Buddhism, and more specifically in tantric or Vajrayana Buddhism, such as Tibetan Buddhism, the use of bone is intended to remind us of the very fact of our impermanence, that death will eventually come. 

The mala, trengwa in Tibetan, is the Buddhist rosary, the object that the monk (or even the lay practitioner) almost never separates from, holding it in their hand or wrapped around their wrist. The mala is first and foremost a practical object: it serves as a tactile aid for reciting mantras, while also being used to count them if one has set out to repeat a specific number. The mala is composed of 108 strung beads, which explains its name, as it simply means "garland" (of beads). The different components each hold a specific symbolic meaning: The large bead (or Buddha head) that closes the loop represents the knowledge of emptiness. The small cone on top of it is the mark of emptiness itself.

DZI tiger's teeth give the person who wears this DZI willpower and perseverance. It is believed that this stone helps to focus the mind and achieve one's personal aspirations.

The Dzi is a Tibetan bead of distant origin, bringing many mystical benefits and blessings to its wearer. It is a Tibetan talisman or amulet, the king of good-luck charms, sometimes revered as a true deity.

The success of the Tibetan bead comes from its multiple eyes, which can number up to 21. Dzis are believed to bring good fortune, ward off evil spirits, and protect their wearer from dangers and accidents, and even bring longevity and good health.

The DZI comes from the Central Asian region and is generally found in an area covering Afghanistan, Iran, Tibet, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and even Burma and Thailand.

They are found in many sizes and shapes, with multiple eyes and stripes. Tibetans cherish these beads and consider them ancestral jewels.

The meaning of the Tibetan word "Dzi" translates to "brightness, clarity, splendor". In Mandarin Chinese, dzis are called "beads of heaven". Tibetans recognize, without envy or jealousy, the qualities of brilliant people, those who shine intellectually and attract everyone's attention and admiration.

For Tibetans, wearing a Dzi bead can develop in everyone that natural radiance called Talent. Dzis are considered by Tibetans to be powerful protections.

According to legend, these stones are not of earthly origin, but were shaped by the gods and sown on earth so that whoever finds them will have better Karma. Many legends attribute a divine origin to them. One of them claims that they sometimes fall from the sky, having escaped the treasures of the Gods, while another says that they "ripen" deep underground and that they can sometimes be found inside certain geodes.

Some legends say that they are fossilized insects, and others finally that they are Garuda droppings. Dzis are also mentioned in certain ancient Buddhist texts because some malas intended for advanced Vajrayana practices must be made of Dzi. Dzis dating back 4,500 years have been found in Tibet during archaeological excavations, thus in the midst of the Bön shamanic period, long before the arrival of Buddhism.
