I created this XXL crystal skull mala necklace as a meeting point between three universes: the meditation mala, the mystery of the crystal skull, and the visual power of rock jewelry. Its construction borrows from the 18-bead Buddhist rosary; its mineral heart comes from the Himalayas; its monumental presence evokes artifacts imbued with history and symbolic power found in manga and dark fantasy.
It is neither a reproduction of an ancient liturgical mala nor a simple skull necklace. A Meditation Mala Built Around the Number 18
The necklace consists of 18 natural ebony beads, 30mm in diameter. They are divided into two perfectly balanced groups: nine beads lead to the rock crystal skull; another nine beads continue the circle to the Guru bead.
This structure evokes small Chinese 18-bead rosaries. In Chinese Buddhism, the number 18 can recall the eighteen Arhats, called Luohan: the guardians of Buddha's teachings. The 9 + 9 division opens another interpretation. Nine is the number of cycle completion; eighteen itself reduces to nine in a numerological reading. On one side of the skull, nine steps lead to the contemplation of impermanence. On the other, nine steps lead back to the Guru bead, to the origin and to the teaching.
