This celestial eye obsidian Buddha statuette represents the monk Budai

BUDAI OR MILOFO

Budai, known by various names such as Hotei in Japan and Bố Đại in Vietnam, is an iconic figure in Asian spirituality, often revered for his generosity, joviality, and wisdom. His physical representation is characteristic: a round-faced, smiling, bald Chinese monk with long, pendulous ears, and a prominent, exposed belly.

His appearance exudes an aura of benevolence and contentment. His face always sports a broad smile, reflecting his inner joy and detachment from material concerns. His long ears, often highlighted in artistic representations, symbolize his great wisdom and attentive listening to the needs of others.

Budai is often depicted carrying a hemp sack over his shoulder, hence his name, and holding a staff, symbolizing his life as an itinerant monk. This sack is usually filled with treasures, sweets, or toys, emphasizing his reputation for distributing fortune and happiness to those he meets.

Surrounded by children, disciples, or animals, Budai embodies the ideal of the benevolent and compassionate monk, ready to offer his help and wisdom to all who need it. His presence brings a sense of comfort and optimism, symbolizing the universal quest for happiness and inner peace.

Over the centuries, Budai has become much more than just a religious figure; he has become a cultural symbol of good luck, prosperity and happiness, worshipped and revered by millions across Asia and beyond as the Buddha incarnation of the future Maitreya.

This monk really existed, born in the province of Zhejiang in the 10th century.

As for where to place the Budai statue, here are some suggestions related to tradition:

In a central room: Place the statue in a frequently used room, such as the living room or entry hall, where it can be easily seen and enjoyed by family members and guests.

On a shelf or table: Place the statue on a shelf, coffee table or windowsill, where it can be well displayed and receive sunlight to symbolize light and positivity.

Facing the Front Door: Some prefer to place the Budai statue near the front door to welcome good energies and luck every time someone enters the house.
